BVI Ceramics

Some work from a pottery class at Aragorn's Studio, Trellis Bay in 2011

Figure emerging from slab (series). Slab and coil built, decorated with cobalt oxide mixed with thin clear glaze and sponged off.
Parts one, two and four shown. Part three to follow.

Large slab carved and decorated with bas-relief and painted with underglazes. Mini scene and self portrait detail shown.

Slab made, carved with brain coral pattern and warped after building the bucket form.

Slab made vessels dropped on a hard surface after building to alter their form.

Larger vessels made in the same way as above, but with texture added to the freshly rolled slab, and modelled figure.

Altered figurines.

Raku fired sculptures.

I started out with something familiar! Mainly just to regain a feel for the clay and to work on something that was such a staple of my ceramic work in the past. It was challenging, but made with much more care and attention than I ever gave the figures I made all those years ago!  The glazes here run a lot when over the top of another, which was not something I have had to deal with in the past.

I was asked to make "action figures" of the band A Type of Toad. The only action is that the instruments are removable. I am pleased with how these came out, although the running glaze was an issue on the bass drum. All the drumsticks broke very early on so eventually I decided on matchsticks.  The Trellis Bay fireball was provided by Debbie Entwistle of Aragorn's Studio and A Type of Toad's most fantastical front-woman.

A Toad inspired by the band mentioned above. Coil built and Raku fired.

A model of the Beata, a shipwreck in the British Virgin Islands. Coil built and Raku fired.
